What’s Your Flavor?

Whew! The heat has been intense. All of the popsicles were gobbled up before the kids headed off to camp on Sunday. Here it is Wednesday and I am popsicle-less.  How did that happen?  How is it Wednesday already?! What is going on around here? A few mid-week odds and ends, that’s what.

1. Given the current boot situation, I think this is as close to the beach as I’m going to get this summer. *le sigh*

2. After stalling out several times over the week-end, my poor truck is getting repaired.  Since two thirds of my crew are at camp, I didn’t have to get a mini van from the rental company (Enterprise, you’re the real MVP).  I’ve been tooling around in this and I might not give it back.

3. I’ve been itching to do something craft-tastic lately, but have been coming up empty on ideas.  As luck would have it, Buzzfeed DIY sent 33 Gorgeous DIY Projects to Decorate Your Grown-Up Apartment right to my inbox! It’s such an ask and you shall receive moment, I’m seriously thinking I need to ask a little bigger, you know what I mean? Of the 33 ideas, this one looks will be perfect in the kitchen. V and I cleared out the paint chip aisle at Lowe’s like we were on Supermarket Sweep.

4. And speaking of stuff to hang on the walls. . .um, I need this, like, immediately!

5. Summer is a great time for cook-outs, clambakes, and generally any excuse to get together with friends and family over food.  I’d really like to try a picnic party: just invite folks over with blankets and baskets and just sit in the grass and catch up.  You know, like this.  Of course, given the heat index, the bugs, and the inevitable kiddie meltdowns, this may just have to happen in my imagination.

What odds and ends did I miss?  Share them with me in the comments!

Let’s See What Develops, Pt. 4

Let’s See What Develops, Pt. 4

I love photography. I love pictures. I love looking at them. I love being in them. I love taking them. However, with the way I’ve been treating my camera, you’d never know it. While I am an avid Instagrammer, I have been neglecting my DSLR.  My camera body is pristine from lack of use.  My Lightroom is laughably outdated.  I need to make a change beyond toting my camera around with me like another member of the family.  I need to examine what it is that I love about photography, how I got here and why I want to keep taking pictures.  Some introspection was in order.

The photography blog, Click It Up a Notch, has a series of photographer interviews that I read voraciously.  The more I read, the more my mind sparked and fired, ideas pinging around faster than I could grab them.  If reading about other photographers created such a response, what would happen if I posed those same questions* to myself?   Over the next few weeks, we’re going to find out.

What Type of Background Do You Have?

I’m self-taught. I have a great number of photographer friends who have allowed me not only to pick their brains and pepper them with questions.   When I’ve worked as a model, some of the photographers have let me see my film — or digital snaps, nowadays — and point out what’s working and what’s not with the lighting, speed, and depth of field. Being able to observe  in the field is an invaluable experience.

I’m a bookworm and have a pretty extensive collection of books to which I refer. One of my favorites is Nikon D5000: From Snapshots to Great Shots. It’s full of useful, instructional information as well as photos taken by that camera body that make it a great resource.     I have taken classes and workshops. I’ve taken ones offered by professionals on Groupon and ones offered by the fine arts museum in my city.  I read a lot of articles from bloggers as well as a scores of pins from Pinterest about ways to improve everything from the care of my camera and lenses to how to get the most natural looking expressions from feisty children.

Without a doubt, hands-on experience is the best.  Taking snaps of my kids, my dinner, myself — all of those instances provide me with information on what I can do to be better and more creative for the next time.

Recipe Friday: Birthday Cake Milkshakes

Recipe Friday: Birthday Cake Milkshakes

What a week!  M and C had camp, which meant V and I got to hang out for some one on one time.  We did the Children’s Museum — twice –, grocery shopping, a lazy day at home and of course, a trip to Target.

Today, as the camp for M and C came to an end, both of them had a little program in one of their classes.  Camp started at 9am.  C’s program was at 11:30am, M’s at 3:30pm.  Pick up was at 4pm.  You can imagine what kind of yo-yo action was going on today as I did my best to get to everyone’s activity with a cranky-free V in tow.

And did I mention that C leaves for a week at sleep away camp on Sunday and M leaves for Camp Grandma on Monday? There’s been a bit of running around going on to get everyone squared away.  Tempting as it was to just flop down on the couch and let the girls do what they would, I decided I had enough juice left to whip up a fun summer treat.

Ice cream, frosting, sprinkles in a frosty glass? Who doesn’t love that?

Odds and Ends

Odds and Ends

Thursday already! Time is alternately zipping by and dragging along.  It zips by when I’ve got ten things to take care of and about 10 minutes in which to take of them. It drags when I unstrap my boot for the first, third, and fifth set of deep knees bends I’ve got to do every day for twenty minutes at a clip. Without fail, every time I sneak a peek at the timer, I’ve got seven minutes still to go.  You can find a lot of fun things on the web in 20 minutes, five times a day, though.  Here are the odds and ends that piqued my interest.

1.  This necklace.

dress, Anthropologie, summer, fun

Amaya Dress from Anthropologie With Mystic Desert Necklace

I have had SUCH terrible customer service experiences every time I go into the Anthropologie at Stony Point that I just avoid it.  I was, however, out of town and decided to check out the Anthropologie at the mall close to where I was staying.  I saw that sweet dress on a mannequin and decided to try it on.  Have you ever had a shopping experience where you just get totally giddy and giggly because something fits, looks cute on you and the price is right? Me, in this dress, hit all the marks.  Too bad the salesperson couldn’t be bothered to do her job when I asked for an alternate size. Her eye roll was so epic, another clerk had to hit on the back to get her eyes back where they belonged.  In any event, I got the dress, but didn’t notice the necklace until I was checking out the website later on.  Definitely going back for that — with my expectations for decent customer service down around my ankles.

2. You know who does have great customer service? Nordstrom.  The Hubs and I had a black tie affair this past week-end that left me scrambling for an appropriate dress to not only make me look glam-tastic, but cover up the boot. Nordstrom delivered and they hooked me up with a rush job on the tailoring.  When I brought the dress in, I made sure I had my shoe (really, just one) and whatever foundation garments I was going to wear.  Yes, that means Spanx.  I’m pretty sure I’ve blown out the pair of Power Panties that I scooped up from the hosiery department, so I went up to the lingerie department and put myself at the mercy of the clerk.  I told her what I needed: maximum streamlining, no VPL, lift the can and flatten the tummy.  She handed me these:

Spanx, thinstincts, Sara Blakely, shapewear

Bless you, Sara Blakely, bless you!

Cue the hallelujah chorus.  These things are AMAZING!  And I totally get why there is a difference between location and price point.  Not all Spanx are created equal. If you want that maximum sucking in effect, you’re gonna pay for it.  I totally get that now. Oh, and evidently this pair has razor cut legs (as opposed to non-razor cut legs on the others?) officially making me a total bad-ass.

3. While things were firing on all cylinders as far as my shapewear and dress were concerned, there was a bit of tense moment when it came to make-up application.  I’m usually good with mascara, concealer and a little pop of lippie.  For special occasions, like the one we had, I have to dip into my bag of tricks and pull out my eyeliner and a steady hand.  I’m eyeliner application deficient. I was absent the day that lesson was shared.  But, like a good proper prior planner that I am, I had a heart to heart with Pinterest and tried to figure out some goof-proof applications.

So, about this. . . not so much. I ended up free-handing it with moderate success.  I did learn that you should do your non-dominant side first so that you can match the dominant side with more precision!  The more you know!

4. This whole Rachel Dolezal thing makes my hair hurt. I’m happy to discuss (face to face) why I think her actions are completely and thoroughly unacceptable. What I won’t do, however, is tolerate rude, close-minded comments that call into question my ethnic background.  Don’t ask me for my receipt or cock your head at me as if doing so will spell out who sits on the branches of my family tree.

bye, Prince, no

His Purple-ness Has Spoken

5. And in other news, this happened.

Janet Jackson, Damita Jo, tour, Unbreakable

Miss Jackson, if you’re nasty.

Where do you find your inspiration?

Nikon D5000 | 100/sec | 50mm | f/3.5

Nikon D5000 | 100/sec | 50mm | f/3.5

My mom used to get Vanity Fair magazine when I was growing up.  I can remember thumbing through the gloss pages during the mid 90’s, the height of the age of the Super Model.  The iconic Herb Ritts photograph of  Stephanie Seymour, Cindy Crawford,  Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, and Tatjana Patiz was like none I’d ever seen before.  I was so blown away not just by the beauty of the models, but by the sheer simplicity of the image.  There was no busy set, no props, just gorgeous lighting and the strong clean lines of the women being photographed.  Never before had I seen a picture where the subjects looked like they could reach out from the page and brush their fingers against my own. Everything up until that point had been flat and two-dimensional.  Beginning with that image, my ideas of what pictures, of what photography were forever changed.

I recognize now that I have always tried to emulate that creamy, dreamy style of portraiture that I saw all of those years ago. The trouble was, I didn’t know how to describe it. I didn’t know that I could pursue knowledge of photography and leapfrog that into a potential career.  For a long time, I pressed my creativity down, down, down in order to let the more practical aspects of my personality take focus.  It wasn’t until about five years ago, the lid snapped off and the creativity came surging out.

My current sources of inspiration include websites like Pinterest, and Instagram.  I do continue to love images from Vanity Fair, and have added Vogue, GQ, and other glossies to the list.  My tumblr site is a true depiction of what inspires me, with respect to photography.  I’ve amassed a catalog of everything from fashion to food, destinations to decor. It’s my personal treasure box of images that make my eyes water with possibility and pleasure. When an image plucks at me, sets off something vibrating inside of me that makes me feel like I have got to do that, it’s priming me to embark on a creative endeavor.

Recipe Friday: Pad Thai

Recipe Friday: Pad Thai

I’m a sucker for unique packaging. I like minimalist backgrounds, pops of color, and fonts that look like giggles and tickles. I saw this on the shelf at The Fresh Market the other day.

Usually, when I grocery shop, I try to stick to the list I’ve prepared.  For the most part, my cart is full of produce and fresh foods. I try to keep the packaged foods to a minimum.  Like I said, however, I’m a sucker for packaging.  I mean, look at this box! Let’s break down why I find it so appealing.

1. Marion’s Kitchen  — one of my grandma’s was named Marion. She didn’t cook, though.

2. Pad Thai — Um, delicious much?!

3. Black and White Photo of a smiling woman — Black and white photography is a favorite style of mine.  As for the woman, well, I don’t know her, but that grin says, “Yes! You can make Pad Thai in two easy steps and it will be incredible! Look at my smile! It says you are a Top Chef and Asian cuisine is your specialty!” Well, maybe it doesn’t say all that, but it’s implied.

4. The text  — I don’t know the font, but I know it’s not Comic Sans.  2 steps for 2-4 people in 20 minutes? What’s not to like? The promise of quality ingredients? Well, since you’re supplying them yourself, you’ve got control over that.

It’s no surprise this box made it from the shelf to the cart to my kitchen counter. Even though we are in the midst of grilling season, I took a break from searing steaks and I served this dish along with some Trader Joe’s Asian Cousin — Trader Ming’s — favorite side dishes: potstickers, cha siu bao, and scallion pancakes.  With a head of steamed broccoli for some additional color and nutrition, I had a complete meal in a little over 20 minutes.

As far as the flavor profile, it was certainly evocative of pad thai. All of the elements were there: chicken, rice noodles, scallions, egg — I even added some crushed peanuts on top for crunch.  My noodles weren’t as soft and slippery as you would find a traditional Thai restaurant, nor was my chicken sliced as thinly. Both of those kitchen tricks come with practice. The flavor of the sauce was sweet and tangy, but again, not exactly identical to the pad thai sauce I’ve had in restaurants.  We certainly ended up with more than 2-4 servings, which I was happy to share with my parents when they came to visit the following day.  Much like it’s cousin, Chinese take-out, this Pad Thai was even better the second day.

With other dishes like Butter Chicken and Red Thai Curry, looks like Marion has a few other things cooking in her kitchen.  Maybe I will, too.  Happy Friday, y’all!

Marion’s Kitchen Pad Thai Kit

Instructions from Marion’s Kitchen Pad Thai Kit

Includes

– rice stick noodles
– pad Thai sauce

– 2 Tbsp vegetable oil

Prep Work While The Chicken Browns

Directions
1. Place RICE STICK NOODLES in a large heat-safe bowl and cover with boiling water. Use a fork to stir and separate the noodles then leave to soak for about 5 minutes or until softened. Drain noodles and rinse with cold water. Set aside for later.

2. Heat oil over high heat and fry your favorite meat or prawns for up to 5 minutes (2-3 mins for prawns) or until just cooked through. Push everything to one side of the pan and add egg to the empty side. Let egg set for a minute or until just starting to firm up. Break up egg with a spatula, then toss through your meat or prawns. Add softened rice stick noodles to the pan, along with my PAD THAI SAUCE. Use tongs to separate and toss noodles through the sauce until mixed through. Remove pan from heat and toss though spring onion. Serve with lemon wedges to squeeze over just before eating. Enjoy!

Odds and Ends

Odds and Ends

It’s Wednesday! Of course, this being summer vacation, that really doesn’t mean anything.  Each day is like the one before it and will probably be like the one after it.  Only difference is this day starts with a W and ends with a glass of wine.

Odds and Ends this week are a handful of things that have caught my eye while I’ve been flipping through the Internet under the pretense of doing work.  Some work has been done, truly.  I’ve been putting some things together to give my website a little face-lift.   I’m working kicking up more content.  And, finding gems like ones below is work. . .the more I tell myself that, the truer it is, right? Here’s what has me looking like a heart-eyed emoji:

1. I stumbled across this company while scrolling through Instagram.  This mug needs to come to my house because truer words were never spoken.

mug, funny, raising tiny humans, wee structed

2. Speaking of things I saw on Instagram that I have now deemed necessary to make my life complete, this shirt for the win.  I read this list and hear “These are a few of my favorite things . . .” playing in the background.

shirt, natural, natural hair, hair products, product junkie

(via)

3. So, I have to do 20 minutes of deep knee bends, five times a day.  That’s 100 minutes of deep knee bends.  What’s a girl to do to pass the time? I’m a big binge watcher and I desperately needed something to fill the queue.  Outlander wrapped, Game of Thrones is all but done, House of Cards is but a fond memory, and Orange is the New Black won’t come on for a few days, still.   Lucky me, I’ve found Black Sails.  Arrrrgh, I love this show; I may even pick up Treasure Island once I’m all caught up.

black sails, pirates, starz, binge watch, tv

(via)

4. New favorite kitchen gadget: the herb stripper. While I enjoy cooking with fresh herbs for the flavor that they provide, pulling the delicate leaves off of the stems was tedious. I’m too impatient. I either under-seasoned a dish because I grew bored of pulling off leaves, or over seasoned a dish because I was too lazy to pull the leaves off and just chopped up the bundle, leaves, stems, and all.  No. . .not really, but it was super tempting to do.  Now with this ingenious tool, I’m threading everything through the holes and separating leaves from stalk lickety split.  Fresh salsa, anyone?

kitchen gadet, kitchen geek, cooking, kitchen, chef, tool

This changes everything!

5. Sadly, my vacation plans went swirling down the drain when the doc said I’d be sporting this boot for the next three months.  Still, that hasn’t stopped me from imaging what it would be like to be laid up on a white beach with turquoise water lapping at my toes.  I see myself buff and bronze, sweating umbrella drink and hand, sporting this super cute bathing suit. Yes, I can definitely see myself in this.
